Shane Whipple was convicted of the 2018 murder of his aunt, Jennifer Whipple, and sentenced to 75 years in prison. The victim, 46-year-old Jennifer Whipple, was slain in her apartment at the Taylor Woods complex in Winslow in January 2018.
Shane Whipple had been staying with his aunt for about a year when she asked police to escort him from her home at the Taylor Woods complex on Jan. 26, the prosecutor's office said. The woman told police her nephew had held a knife to her throat, according to a court record. Homicide detectives discovered that Whipple purchased a hatchet at the Berlin Mart the next day and returned to the apartment with it," according to an account from the prosecutor's office.
Surveillance video showed Whipple "carrying what was believed to be the hatchet" as he entered and left his aunt's apartment building on the afternoon of Jan. 26, 2018. Jennifer Whipple's cellphone showed she dialed the number for Winslow's municipal building minutes before her nephew's return, according to a probable cause statement for her nephew's arrest. "It is believed she was attempting to call police," it said.
